Tour To The Tower
455 mile charity bike tour from Anröchte, Germany to the tower of London
Earlier this year Fena's Granddad, Thomas Sharp MVO, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After Fena and Nick moved into a little village in the country her grandfather gave her his bicycle to help her get fit and explore the area around their little home. On July 5th, Fena embarked on her first bike ride since she was at school over 10 years before. After messaging her granddad that they had cycled 10 miles, he responded saying he was so glad the bike was finally being used.
In August 2014, Tom sadly passed away. He was able to come home thanks to the wonderful support of the nurses from Marie Curie just like he wanted. I had spent so many years watching the adverts on TV believing the nurses do a brilliant job but until you see it it really is hard to comprehend. Not only did they keep Tom comfortable and as pain free as possible, they allowed him to keep his dignity at all times. The nurses not only provided support for him but for the whole family. Without their compassion the last days of Tom's life would have been so much harder.
Shortly after Nick suggested that Tom's bike should be put to use. He suggested that they should complete a trip from Germany (when Fena's grandparent's met and lived and where her mum and aunt were born) to the Tower of London in Tom's memory. Nick is not afraid of hard challenges - he did complete the Marathon des Sables in April 2014 after all! Fena on the other hand is incredibly lazy and shies away from exercise.
And so the 'Tour To The Tower' was born. A 455 mile charity bike ride to raise money and awareness for Marie Curie nurses and to make Tom proud. Taking place in March 2015 there is not long to train for such an epic #biketour!
Bring on the challenge!
